Furthermore, it is a well known fact that Google AdSense has  been the preferred choice  for  website monetization for many website/blog owners for some time now.

Adding adsense code to your wordpress website can be quite tricky, especially if you are not familiar with wordpress and how it works. This is the part where most people find it difficult. In this article, we are going to be looking how to add google adsense code in wordpress. It’s pretty simple and easy to understand, and you can achieve this in five easy steps.

N:B This will only work for self hosted WordPress sites(wordpress.org), and not wordpress.com

How To Add Google Adsense Code In WordPress

SignUp with Google AdSense

As with any Google service, you have to sign up first before you can use it.  You can either log in with your existing Google account, or create a new one directly on the Adsense Website.

Agree to their terms and policies

Google Adsense policies are simple and straight forward. They consist of rules like:

  • You must not trick people into clicking the ads
  • You must not click the ads yourself
  • You must have a Privacy Policy Page
  • Do not edit the code they provide you
  • Do not display the ad within a popup

Create Your Ad Units

Once you have been approved and your Google AdSense  Account activated, you will be able to add the codes to your website.  To do this, sign into your already approved Google AdSense account, click ‘My ads’ then ‘+ New ad unit’.  This is the page where you can select the type of advert you wish to create. There are lots of different Ad units, and you are free to choose any one. It can  be a banner ad for the top of your page, or a sidebar ad.  Feel free to play around with the other  settings and click on ‘’Save and get code’’ when you are done.

Add the code to your website

After clicking on ‘Save and get code’, a pop which contains your ad code appears on your screen. Simply copy the code from the popup on your screen and;

  • Log into your WordPress website
  • Go to Appearance > Widgets
  • Click and drag a ‘Text widget’ into your sidebar
  • Paste the AdSense code into the widget
  • Click Save

That’s it! You should have Google Adsense codes displaying on the sidebar of your website. If you have an ad blocker enabled on your browser, you won’t be able to see the ad on your website. There are several  other ways to add Google Adsense Codes to a wordpress website/blog. One of them is by using Plugins. Plugins can be used to add google adsense codes to a different parts of a wordpress website especially inside posts.
